Hungry for Love

The project Hungry for Love is part of Céline Manz’ body of work What do you know about art, you’re not a lawyer. It explores the question of ‘Who owns the artwork?’ in relation to copyright law and the notion of authorship. Within this body of work, Manz published a practical guide for artists working with ‘appropriated’ contents from the Internet called The Appropriator’s User Guide. She continued her research in the series A1, 44 digital collages based on photographs by fashion photographer Terry Richardson. In this series, the popular photographer’s images are used as iconic representatives of a mainstream phenomenon known as ‘Pornification’. Manz exposes the visual language widely used in advertising by overdrawing satirically Richardsons images she ‘found’ on the Internet.

Hungry for Love was originally planned as a follow-up publication of the series A1, but soon turned out to be a project on its own. As a publication, Hungry for Love is the sum of virtual contents put into the new form of an artist book.

In collaboration with graphic designer Xavier Fernández Fuentes, the publication uses – same as in A1 – only content coming from the Internet. Fernández Fuentes juxtaposes Manz’s collages from the A1 series on top of images Terry Richardson shot for advertising campaigns of the fashion label Sisley. These campaigns, notorious for their explicit character, formatively changed the face of advertising and had a great influence on the generation both Manz and Fernández Fuentes belong to. One of these campaigns – called Hungry for Love - was the main source of inspiration of Manz’s A1 series. Interesting enough, the same Sisley campaign also served as a source of inspiration for Fernández Fuentes and triggered his interpretations of Hungry for Love, which are bundled in the publication as a visual essay with a strong narrative of its own.

Hungry for Love questions the notion of ownership over the rights on artworks that are virtually accessible. By making the publication available for free download as printable and view-on-screen versions and, thus, renounce the control over its distribution and financial revenues, it provokes to reconsider the meaning of artistic ownership. By informing Terry Richardson on the existence of both A1 and Hungry for Love, the question of ‘Who owns the artwork’ – and therefore the rights over its distribution – is put into a concrete perspective, going beyond the philosophical aspects of the matter. As Richardson’s reactions have been friendly but observant, the question whether he would claim a copyright infringement or attests the works’ autonomous character remains unanswered. Yet.

For the exhibition at WOW, extracts of the Hungry for Love publication are presented on billboards, bringing back the appropriated content of the publication to its original - advertising – context.

Opening

The exhibition will be opened by Céline Manz at Wednesday 29 October at 7pm.

Slow Tech

Slow Tech is the first exhibition in a series called ‘Curated by…’Three times a year, WOW will work with a co-curator – a designer or a curator – to organize an exhibition showing work by both established and young talent.

11 design chairs

WOW is proud to present ‘Slow Tech’, an exhibition showing 11 chairs that fuse experimental materials or an innovative production technique to a craft-base process. It is a fusion of high tech en slow crafts. The Knotted Chair by Marcel Wanders will be presented as ‘the mother of all slow tech chairs’ and will literally be the centre piece. The other 10 chairs will be grouped around it.

Exhibition series ‘Curated by…’

Slow Tech is the first exhibition in a series called ‘Curated by…’ initiated by WOW. Three times a year, WOW will work with a co-curator to organize an exhibition showing work by both established and young talent. The first exhibition in this series focuses on Design, the next will be on Fashion (Dec. ‘14-Feb ‘15).

Curator Jeroen Junte

The exhibition is a collaboration between Jeroen Junte and WOW. Junte is a well known design critic . He writes about art and culture with a strong focus on design and architecture. With his books, but also with his bimonthly talk show in Pakhuis de Zwijger (Amsterdam), Junte endeavors to inform both insiders and interested people in an accessible manner about design.

The first ‘Curated by…’ exhibition focuses on chair designs by young Dutch designers. All are the result of a material experiment or a special production method. The underlying idea is that Dutch designers today show an increasing interest in an investigative and experimental way of designing. Jeroen Junte will share his personal view on each of the chairs, and in doing so giving insight in his way of looking at trends and design in general.

Participating designers and their chairs:

Marcel Wanders – Knotted Chair // Jolan van der Wiel – Gravity // Rutger de Regt – Happy Misfit // Lenneke Langenhuijsen – buroBELÉN – TuTu // Eric Klarenbeek – Mycelium // Maarten Schenkeveld – One Piece A Day // Chris Kabel – Seam Chair // Pascal Smelik – Kaarsrecht Stoel // Marjan van Aubel – Well Proven Chair // Martijn Rigters – Foam Party Chair // Dirk van der Kooij -Endless Chair.

Opening

WOW cordially invites you to the opening of the exhibition ‘Slow Tech’ at Saturday 4 October. The official opening speech will be held by curator Jeroen Junte at 17.00h in WOW.

LVIV

18 September WOW will open a new exhibition showing photo’s of Lviv. The city of Lviv, situated in Western Ukraine, was formerly named Leopolis, Lemberg, Lwów and Lvov. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, but is still struggling with its history. It is a city in which Hitler and Stalin were given free rein, resulting in the systematic destruction of a thriving Central-European culture. Many pre-war residents were expelled or murdered. Yet the buildings have been miraculously salvaged. How do the current residents deal with that heritage?

Five Dutchmen became intrigued by this question. Documentary photographer Dolph Kessler penetrates with his photographs deep into the Lviv of today. He exhibits his pictures in the Green Gallery of WOW. Also a book is launched in which journalist Michiel Driebergen, urban planner Kees van Ruyven and philosopher Ruud Meij explore the history, the present and the future of Lviv in three fascinating essays. Herman Zonderland has made a unique map supplement. This book is a declaration of love for this pearl in the heart of Europe.

Opening

The exhibition will be opened in the Green Gallery of WOW (1th floor) by Chris Krijne, journalist of the VPRO, on Thursday 18 September at 17.00 h.
