Very proud to have Jolene amongst us at the preview of WOW.
Jolene is the new alter ego of Jolien Grunberg. With the new spelling of her name, the singing songwriter wants to make clear that she has stricken a new road. Until recently she was the frontwoman of a power trio, now she makes music with a soul-dressing.
Her debut release as Jolene, containing 7 self-written songs, was recorded under the watchful eye of producer Ralph Timmermans.
Jolene Grunberg sang before she could talk and written songs before she went to highschool. Not much longer after turning 12 she started her first band. At the age of 20, Jolene was accepted to the Amsterdam Conservatory. With two fellow students she began the rock trio Furistic, with which she won several awards. The audience got to know her as a passionate, and sometimes even ruthless, singer with enormous vocal chords. When Jolene cast off her rock-coat and accompanied herself on an acoustic guitar, she showed her tender side; it became clear that the powerful voice was also a sensitive instrument.
Her unique voice and interpretation was also noticed by radio producer Co de Kloet, asking her to participate in a Tribute To Jeff Buckley with the American producer / guitarist Gary Lucas and the Metropole Orchestra in Paradiso, Amsterdam. The recordings can be heard on the NTR website. The gig was so successful that Jolene was then asked to participate in a musical tribute to Captain Beefheart with Metropole Orchestra, together with the American singer Nona Hendryx (once the group Labelle).
These are all great and honorable things. But the main focus of this year is Jolene. An EP was recorded and ready for release, the album was written and ready to record. To be continued.
